On Thursday, parts of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii were closed due to nearly 100 earthquakes recorded beneath the summit of Kīlauea volcano, with the largest measuring 3.4 magnitude at 9:52 p.m. HST Wednesday. The strongest seismic activity occurred between about 8 p.m. Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday, prompting the closure of the Keanakākoʻi area for public safety. However, the Devastation Trail parking lot remains accessible. Since then, summit inflation has stabilized, and earthquake activity has decreased. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory predicts that the 55th episode of Kīlauea’s ongoing eruption is imminent after a shallow magma intrusion near the existing eruption location.
