A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck near the South Gippsland town of Leongatha in Victoria at around 2:01 am, causing tremors felt across Melbourne and eastern suburbs. The epicenter was about 135 kilometers southeast of Melbourne, with a depth of 10 kilometers. Geoscience Australia recorded over 15,000 reports from people who experienced the shaking. A geophysicist noted it was one of the strongest quakes in the region in the last two decades but did not expect significant damage. Additionally, a magnitude 3.1 aftershock followed shortly after 3 am near Leongatha.
