Jamel Abdela, a 32-year-old Eritrean national, was sentenced on July 25 at Winchester Crown Court in Kent to 18 months in jail for piloting an overcrowded small boat carrying 26 people, including six children, across the English Channel. The prosecution revealed that Abdela attempted to evade authorities by diving into the center of the boat and changing his location when immigration officers approached. He was identified later based on a hat he wore. The boat lacked essential safety equipment like flares, GPS, or maps, raising concerns about endangering lives during the crossing. Abdela told police he had paid €800 (£680) for the journey, which began at 17:00 BST the previous day from Libya and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A Home Office spokesperson noted that Abdela was the 20th small boat pilot to be imprisoned in four months for such offenses.
