In July 2025, residential electricity prices in New York increased by $270, or 14%, compared to the previous year. This rise is nearly triple the national increase of 4.9%. The state's Energy Research and Development Authority predicts that home-heating oil prices will surge by 69% this winter, from $3.72 to $6.27 per gallon. Governor Kathy Hochul has introduced a $200 "energy rebate" check program as part of her "$1 billion Protecting Our Wallets" scheme. However, critics argue that the program is merely redistributing funds among taxpayers and does not address the root cause of the rising energy costs tied to her climate policies, which include closing fossil-fuel and nuclear plants and blocking pipelines.
