On Tuesday, Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that Ferhat Gundogdu, president of Turkey’s football refereeing body, and six others were arrested for alleged interference in refereeing procedures. The arrests followed searches at their residences and workplaces. The investigation centers on accusations involving the formation of referee classifications, assignments, scoring processes, and rule examinations. This move follows last year's suspension of 149 referees accused of illegal betting, with 371 out of 571 professional league referees having betting accounts. A court in Istanbul placed Gundogdu and four others under pretrial detention on Saturday for charges including forgery and breach of trust. The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has not directly addressed the arrests amid ongoing investigations linked to last year’s scandal, likely impacting the federation's integrity further.
