On Friday, a young bear attacked two people outside their home in the Sunset Heights subdivision near Salmon, Idaho. The attack occurred around 3:30 AM in an area with a population of just over 3,000 residents. One victim was airlifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls for treatment.
Idaho Fish and Game responded by mobilizing their Wildlife Human Attack Response Team, and with the help of a professional houndsman, located the bear and its family—its sibling and what was believed to be their mother—and euthanized all three. The sheriff’s office advised residents on how to prevent future encounters, including securing food smells outside, blocking entry points, and using deterrents.
This incident highlights the importance of preventive measures in bear country, as officials emphasized removing attractants like trash and outdoor pet food to avoid further wildlife conflicts.
