Quick Summary

During his concert at Gillette Stadium on Friday, musician Zach Bryan wore a shirt with "Free Palestine" and "An appeal to heaven" printed on it. This follows similar incidents where rapper Macklemore faced consequences for wearing a "Free Palestine" shirt during a concert in New Jersey last month; as a result, Macklemore was dropped from Ed Sheeran's tour due to concerns about antisemitic rhetoric. Robert Kraft, the owner of Gillette Stadium, explicitly excluded Macklemore from performing there because of his comments and history.

Story summary

Country singer Zach Bryan wore a "Free Palestine" shirt during his concert at Gillette Stadium near Boston on Friday night, one month after stadium owner Robert Kraft banned rapper Macklemore from performing there due to pro-Palestinian comments. The shirt read "FREE PALESTINE" and included the phrase "AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN" with a pine tree logo, referencing an American Revolutionary-era slogan. Bryan's guitarist Noah Le Gros also wore a green Palestine soccer jersey during the show, while drummer Nate Head donned a white-and-tan striped jersey honoring 5-year-old Hind Rajab, who was killed in Gaza. This incident occurred amid controversy over Macklemore’s removal from Ed Sheeran’s tour after he supported Palestinians at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Narrative

"Based on Macklemore's recent actions, material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran's shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community, we determined that his participation in the September 25th and 26th concerts at Gillette Stadium would cross that line," Kraft wrote in a after Macklemore's remarks.
