The New York Liberty faced off against the Atlanta Dream in Game 1 of the WNBA semifinals on Sunday. Despite being the No. 8 seed, the Liberty had previously swept the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx with an average margin of victory of 16 points. However, they struggled against a more experienced and resilient Dream team that won their first-round series convincingly by sweeping the Washington Mystics with a decisive 93-75 win.
The Dream, led by Jordin Canada's strong second-half performance (20 of her 25 points) and five steals, secured a 92-82 victory. Despite missing star player Allisha Gray due to a left hand injury, the Dream showcased their defensive prowess, forcing 21 turnovers that they capitalized on for 32 points. New York's Breanna Stewart had 19 points, while Sabrina Ionescu led with 27 but it wasn't enough as Atlanta’s defense overwhelmed them in the third quarter. This loss marks a significant challenge for the Liberty, who will need to adjust their strategy quickly before Game 2 on Wednesday in Atlanta.
