In October 2025, Chinese authorities arrested 18 members of Zion Church, a Christian congregation not recognized by the government. Ruth Wang, an attorney who represented Zion Church and its detained members, fled China with her family due to mounting pressure from officials. The Chinese government ordered Wang’s law firm, VDoor Law Firm, to dissolve and instructed its attorneys to stop handling cases for Zion Church and resign. Some VDoor lawyers were suspended from practicing law for six months, while the firm's founder, Zhang Kai, lost his license and was barred from leaving China. When officials contacted Wang in Japan during a family trip, she instead went to Taiwan, aiming to resettle her family in another country like the U.S. or Canada.
