Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, has applied to trademark her voice with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in an effort to combat AI-generated deepfakes. The application includes a four-second audio clip where she repeats "Io sono Giorgia Meloni" ("I am Giorgia Meloni") twice in Italian. This move comes after several instances of manipulated images depicting her circulated online, some even being shared as authentic content, such as an image showing her sitting on a bed in her underwear. Meloni has previously denounced these manipulations as part of efforts to spread false information and target individuals personally. The EUIPO application is currently under examination; however, Italian media reports suggest that even if approved, the trademark would not necessarily prevent the use of her voice in deepfakes but could create additional legal hurdles for those seeking to replicate it.
