The cost of giving birth in the United States is increasing, particularly in New York and New Jersey, where the median price for an in-network vaginal delivery is $23,000 and for a C-section is $27,000, according to data from FAIR Health. Nationally, the average cost has risen by 3.6% compared to last year, but since 2022, there's been a 21% increase for vaginal deliveries and a 28% rise for C-sections. The most expensive state overall is Alaska, with median costs of $31,000 for vaginal birth and $42,000 for a C-section. These figures reflect the total charges billed by providers, which can be significantly higher than what insured families pay out-of-pocket. Out-of-network deliveries are notably more expensive, averaging $43,000 nationally for a C-section, with some states like Nevada seeing costs as high as $79,000.
