Former German spy chief arrested over alleged espionage and treason

August Hanning, a former head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, was arrested on suspicion of espionage and treason. Hanning is accused of passing around 2,000 classified documents containing sensitive information exclusively for internal use by the BND, some of which may have been intended for a foreign intelligence service. His former chief of staff, identified only as Manfred D., was also arrested in connection with these allegations and charged with aiding and abetting treason. Both men were apprehended on Tuesday: Hanning in Bad Toelz-Wolfratshausen, southern Germany, and Manfred D. in Steinfurt, western Germany. The exact identity of the foreign intelligence service involved remains undisclosed, as does confirmation that any material reached its intended recipient. This arrest stems from a separate investigation into the abduction of Christina Block's children in 2023.
