Rising global temperatures have sparked concerns about unauthorized attempts by governments or private entities to alter the Earth's atmosphere. To address these worries, the European Union has allocated €35 million (US$39.4 million) through its Horizon Europe program to fund research and coordination aimed at detecting rogue efforts to block out the sun. This initiative is part of an early-stage effort to manage so-called Solar Radiation Modification technology, which could be used to cool the planet if temperatures reach critical levels. A recent United Nations report warned that global temperatures are likely to surpass the crucial 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold above pre-industrial levels in the near future and could increase to as high as 2.6 degrees without policy changes. Climate change impacts, including wildfires, droughts, hurricanes, and severe floods, are already occurring with increased frequency.
