The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) laid 21 new charges against 11 suspects in northern Manitoba as part of an ongoing investigation into a criminal organization operating on Bunibonibee Cree Nation. This year-long probe, named 'Project Derry' by the RCMP, followed an increase in weapons and drug trafficking on the First Nation community located over 900 kilometres north of Winnipeg. Since June 2025, Manitoba Integrated Law Enforcement Team (MILET) officers have been investigating this issue, initially due to concerns about rising violence in the area.
Supt. Jeff Asmundson, head of MILET, noted that these charges are supplementary to the 51 charges announced last December and now include nine individuals facing new weapons trafficking charges after police confiscated 15 firearms during their investigation. Some of these seized weapons had serial numbers removed, indicating an attempt to obscure their origins or prevent tracking by authorities.
Moreover, five people have been arrested or re-arrested for allegedly being involved in three shootings that took place on the First Nation, which Asmundson described as showing "a flagrant and reckless disregard for human life," with multiple homes targeted in apparent attempts to threaten community members. Two individuals, including one of the suspects, were injured during these incidents.
