Former All-Star pitcher Sam McDowell, nicknamed "Sudden Sam," died at the age of 84 on Monday. The cause of death is unknown but was first reported by KDKA. Over his 15-season career, which spanned from 1962 to 1976, McDowell played for several teams including the Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, and ended with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He won the American League ERA title in 1965 with a 2.18 ERA and made six All-Star Games throughout his career. McDowell’s record was 141-134, achieving a 3.17 ERA across 425 games. Despite his success, he struggled with alcohol abuse, leading to his exit from baseball at the age of 32 in 1975. After seeking help and undergoing rehabilitation in 1978, McDowell pursued higher education and became a licensed therapist specializing in sports psychology and addictions.
