Constable Mia Lay, a 20-year-old police officer with just over 16 months of service, died in a high-speed crash on September 25 in Redfern, Sydney. The marked police vehicle she was riding in collided with a tree at more than 150 km/h, killing her instantly. NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon called it the most personal challenge he faced since taking office. Lay's funeral was held at St Andrew’s Cathedral in central Sydney on Wednesday, attended by mourners who remembered her as passionate and dedicated to protecting others despite the inherent risks. Her father, Clem Lay, expressed pride that his daughter would be remembered for a long time due to the many lives she touched positively. Commissioner Lanyon posthumously awarded Constable Mia Lay the National Police Service Medal at her funeral service, honoring her commitment and legacy in policing.
