Hong Kong education authorities have disclosed that at least 60% of suspected student suicides over the last three academic years involved children aged 15 or below, prompting a call for schools to reduce homework to promote a balanced lifestyle. The Education Bureau reported that school principals referred an average of about 17 high-risk students per month to the Hospital Authority since December 2023, totaling 547 referrals over 2½ years. Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin revealed to lawmakers in March that primary and secondary schools reported 86 suspected student suicide cases between academic years 2023-26 (30, 33, and 23 cases respectively). These statistics highlight a concerning trend of youth mental health issues in Hong Kong's education system.
