In South Korea, after controversy arose over remarks made by athletes following gold medal wins at the Asian Games, officials are considering reducing or eliminating a special military exemption for top-performing sports figures. Three players from the men’s soccer team were criticized for their post-game comments following South Korea's victory over Japan in the Asian Games final last weekend. Despite apologies from these players, public sentiment questioned whether athletes should receive preferential treatment compared to ordinary citizens who must fulfill mandatory military service, including globally famous K-pop group BTS members. On Wednesday, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choi Hwi-young acknowledged during a parliamentary committee session that the current system offering alternative military service exemptions for artists and athletes “will inevitably have to be scaled back.”
