On October 6, American Airlines Flight 37, carrying 287 passengers and crew, was forced to divert from its route from Madrid to Dallas-Fort Worth after six of the plane’s eight bathrooms stopped working during the 10-hour transatlantic journey. The Boeing 777 landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, where pilots declared a "pan-pan" alert due to the inadequate number of operational lavatories on board. With only two restrooms functioning, the crew decided to make an unscheduled stop rather than continue with such limited bathroom facilities available for passengers and staff. The diversion occurred when the plane had more than four hours of fuel remaining, making it heavier upon landing in New York compared to a standard approach.
