Real estate firm Tishman Speyer, along with other investors, announced on Wednesday it is purchasing New York's iconic Chrysler Building and plans to invest $235 million into its refurbishment. The building, an Art Deco landmark that opened in 1930, will undergo extensive renovations to both its interior and exterior. Currently owned by landowner Cooper Union, a New York college, Tishman Speyer will pay rent under a 150-year ground lease agreement with the institution. The project includes restoring the building's crown and upgrading the 61st floor, home to large eagle gargoyles, which will feature an "upscale" lounge. This renovation comes as demand for office space in Manhattan remains high despite limited new construction options.
