Manitoba farmers are facing significant delays in harvesting their crops due to adverse weather conditions this year. Heavy rains earlier in the season followed by hot and dry periods in July and August have slowed progress. According to a recent report, only 65% of all crops in Manitoba have been harvested as of Tuesday, which is 21 percentage points lower than last year and 20 points below the same period in 2024.
Altona area farmer Kelvin Heppner noted that September was particularly challenging with rain almost every other day, heavy dews, and morning fog, making it nearly impossible to harvest crops. As a result, many of the remaining unharvested crops are at risk due to issues like mold and poor quality from prolonged exposure to wet conditions.
However, there is optimism among farmers that they can catch up thanks to more favorable weather in October so far. They are hoping for long, dry days with low humidity to maximize their harvest time before winter sets in.
