A prosecutor in Brunswick County, North Carolina announced on Wednesday that he would seek the death penalty against former Marine Nigel Max Edge for a mass shooting that occurred on September 27, 2025. The incident left three people dead and several others injured when Edge allegedly fired a short-barreled semiautomatic rifle from a small motorboat at a dockside cocktail bar in Southport. Edge faces charges including three counts of first-degree murder and multiple attempted murder and weapons charges. District Attorney Jon David stated that while Edge's history as a Marine who served in Iraq and suffered a traumatic brain injury is significant, these factors must be balanced against the severity of his actions. In April 2026, Superior Court Judge Jason Disbrow ordered Edge to undergo psychiatric treatment after determining he was unable to understand his legal proceedings at that time.
