Rosemary Ashworth, deputy chief executive of The Hygiene Bank, warned that people are increasingly unable to afford essential hygiene items. In a recent survey involving 3,042 UK adults by The Hygiene Bank and In Kind Direct, one in five (18%) reported experiencing hygiene poverty within the last six months or knew someone who had. Additionally, 41% of those affected said they experienced this for the first time that year. The survey indicates a significant shift, impacting individuals previously considered financially stable.
Janice Sedgwick, a volunteer at The Hygiene Bank's Guildford branch, highlighted that essential items include toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo, sanitary pads, and laundry detergent. Ashworth further noted, "It's not people who you might necessarily expect experiencing it," emphasizing the unexpected nature of those affected.
Hygiene poverty is described as a cycle that negatively impacts health, confidence, education, work, and social participation. The charity warns this issue has reached a critical point necessitating urgent action.
