On Thursday morning, Eli Drinkwitz, coach of the University of Missouri's football team, announced via social media that freshman offensive tackle Johnnie "DJ" Jones successfully underwent a heart transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday. The surgery was deemed successful and Jones is currently recovering.
Drinkwitz expressed gratitude towards the medical staff who treated Jones as well as the donor family whose gift made the transplant possible. Missouri's coaching staff first identified an issue with Jones' heart during freshman intake testing over the summer. After two weeks without a definitive diagnosis, they sought a second opinion from the Mayo Clinic, where doctors discovered a more severe heart condition necessitating the transplant.
Jones, who graduated from Venice High School on Florida’s Gulf Coast as a four-star recruit, signed with Missouri last year and was expected to contribute significantly to the team's offensive line.
