The Aporia
Taylor, A. (2026, October 9). What it's really like to move your elderly parents into the family home. We gave up our bedroom for them and rowed over washing up, but I'd urge everyone to read our story before they waste this precious opportunity. At 48, Alison Taylor has taken on the responsibility of caring for both her elderly parents, Mum, aged 79, and Dad, aged 85, along with raising her two children in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. This arrangement began around two years ago when Alison's family moved from a three-bedroom cottage in London to a five-bedroom Victorian house they purchased in the north of England. They later built a bungalow in their back garden for the parents' convenience, allowing them to live separately but close enough to interact daily.
Alison identifies as one of the 1.3 million 'sandwich carers' in the UK who care for both children and elderly relatives. While she acknowledges the challenges, such as conflicts over household chores (including a recent argument about a garlic press), Alison feels fortunate because she genuinely enjoys spending time with her parents and appreciates the family support system this setup provides.
