In Busselton, Western Australia in 2024, a couple, Nathan James Dekkers and Isabel Maree Busher, both aged 26, were jailed for torturing an 11-week-old puppy named Douglas to death. The pair had pleaded guilty to over a dozen animal cruelty charges, including beating the puppy and lying to RSPCA investigators. On sentencing day at the Bunbury Magistrates Court, Dekkers received an 11-month jail term while Busher got eight months. Their original May sentencing was delayed for Busher's psychiatric evaluation. Both are eligible for parole after serving half their sentences.
