Hydro-Québec, Quebec’s main electricity provider, presented a proposal to double energy costs for data centers at a public hearing overseen by the Régie de l’énergie. The utility hired consultants from Dunsky who predicted that data center demand could increase by 133% between 2024 and 2030, largely due to the growth in the AI industry. Under Hydro-Québec’s proposal, data centers requiring more than five megawatts of capacity would see their rates rise to an average of 13 cents per kilowatt-hour, nearly twice what they currently pay as large-power customers. The hearing will continue in December when representatives from Google and environmental groups are expected to question the proposals.
