Yorkshire was officially declared in a state of drought on Friday by the Environment Agency due to extremely low reservoir and river levels following an unusually dry spring, summer, and early autumn. This marks an upgrade from its previous "prolonged dry weather" status since late July. Vicki Townend, area environment manager for the Environment Agency, noted that Yorkshire has experienced its fifth driest period on record between April and September. Despite this, Yorkshire Water announced it will not introduce water restrictions at present but urged customers to conserve water to aid recovery efforts. The region's dry conditions are linked to climate change trends, with more volatile weather likely bringing both droughts and floods in the future.
