According to the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances released in early September, families headed by someone aged 75 or older are now the wealthiest group in America. This demographic's median net worth reached $504,000 in 2025, marking a substantial increase from previous years. The survey highlights that these families also experienced significant income growth, with their median annual income rising by 24% since 2022 to $67,000, largely due to gains in retirement assets and the stock market's robust performance, which saw the S&P 500 increase by about 78% over this period. However, while overall wealth inequality slightly reduced due to broad income gains, a growing proportion of lower-income Americans are struggling with high debt payments and falling behind on those debts as a result of sharply higher inflation.
