In June 2023, Toronto Police conducted a raid on an apartment in Black Creek as part of their investigation into a gun-for-hire network linked to shootings at the U.S. consulate and other targets in Toronto. During the early morning operation, Officer Marc Pinizzotto, a member of the Emergency Task Force (ETF), was fatally shot by Nicholas Bennett during an exchange of gunfire. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) released a report stating that Pinizzotto and another officer had no choice but to fire their weapons in self-defense when Bennett used his firearm multiple times against them. SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded that the officers acted appropriately, believing their lives were in danger. Bennett was later charged with first-degree murder for Pinizzotto's death and remains in critical condition after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds himself.
