Category 3 Hurricane Isaias just hours away from making landfall on Gulf Coast

Hurricane Isaias, which formed off eastern Mexico and intensified into a Category 2 hurricane, made landfall near Destin, Florida on October 9, causing significant damage and disruption across the Gulf Coast. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 25 counties before the storm's arrival to ensure communities had adequate resources to prepare. As of October 14, six deaths have been confirmed in Florida from Isaias; two were caused by fallen trees and carbon monoxide poisoning related to improper generator use, while others resulted indirectly due to storm-related disruptions like power outages affecting medical treatment. The hurricane also left hundreds of thousands without electricity across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. Verisk estimated insured property losses in Florida from wind damage alone could range between $1 billion and $2 billion, though this estimate does not account for storm surge or flood-related damages.
