The New York Islanders have a theoretical opportunity to sign Simon Edvinsson, a 23-year-old restricted free agent defenseman who currently remains unsigned with the Detroit Red Wings despite having reported to training camp without a contract. The situation is complicated as the Red Wings face internal issues, including a meddling owner and an enraged fan base, making them the league’s leader in dysfunctional management. Edvinsson prefers a trade over signing with the Red Wings, though this preference does not entirely rule out re-signing with Detroit. If Alexander Romanov, who recently suffered an ACL tear, were to miss significant time, the Islanders might consider taking substantial risks by offering an offer sheet to Edvinsson. However, at present, there are no indications that the Islanders plan to pursue such a risky move.
