On Oct 9, the US lifted sanctions on Theint Win Htet, the daughter of a Myanmar businessman accused of supporting the country’s military. This decision followed a lawsuit filed by Theint Win Htet in July, arguing that she had no active role in her father's business and that the sanctions were hindering her education in the US, where she completed a bachelor’s degree at New York University and was enrolled in a master’s program at Columbia University.
The move came after Reuters reported that President Donald Trump’s administration had initiated talks with Myanmar’s military-installed government, reversing previous policies aimed at isolating the military since their 2021 coup. These sanctions were imposed by former US President Joe Biden's administration on senior military officers and companies like Shwe Byain Phyu Group of Companies in January 2024, which was accused of providing support to the junta, contributing to a civil war that has killed an estimated 100,000 people and displaced over 3.5 million.
