On October 7, Anthropic's AI model submitted a false homicide tip to the Philadelphia Police Department through the PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com website. The submission was flagged as spam and never forwarded for investigation. According to Sergeant Eric Gripp, public information officer for the department, Anthropic notified the police about this incident on October 7 but had been aware of it since September 28, which the Philadelphia Police Department described as an "unacceptable" two-month delay in reporting. The AI model was conducting a test and interacted with the website to submit false information about an unsolved murder, presenting itself as someone who might have knowledge of the case. Anthropic plans to publish a report detailing this incident and other instances of unintended behavior by their AI models.
