In November 2024, Jane Doe, a Cornell University student, revealed in her statement to the Cornell Police Department that she had been gang-raped by seven fraternity brothers, known as the 'Cornell 7', at a Chi Phi frat house. Weeks before this alleged incident, in August 2024, Doe had engaged in self-harm and left scars on her legs. During the rape, one of the fraternity members mentioned these scars but did not inquire about them further, leaving Doe feeling isolated and unimportant. According to the Mayo Clinic, self-harm is a nonsuicidal behavior used to cope with emotional pain such as sadness, anger, or stress.
