Reform UK, a political party focused on immigration and national identity issues, criticized HMP Maidstone for providing books that help foreign prisoners prepare for the British citizenship test using taxpayers' money. The incident occurred when Zia Yusuf, Reform’s Home Affairs spokesman, claimed that “the establishment is working against patriotic British people.” After discovering that HMP Maidstone had purchased such materials specifically to aid inmates in obtaining UK citizenship, Reform requested the prison governor, Paul Mason, to remove these books and study materials from the library. However, Governor Mason declined, stating that prison libraries are meant for education, literacy improvement, personal development, and rehabilitation purposes. He further noted that there were no security or public protection concerns linked to having these materials available in the prison library.
