A 21-year-old woman died after her homemade bungee jumping device failed in a former quarry near Warstein, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on Saturday around 5:15 PM. She fell about 50 feet (15 meters) and hit rocks below when the equipment malfunctioned while she was with four or five other climbers. Despite emergency responders' efforts to resuscitate her, she died at the scene. Initially thought to be a climbing accident, police later clarified that the incident involved a homemade highline—a double rope setup for bungee jumping—which failed due to improper installation. The woman from Aschersleben was part of an informal group attempting risky recreational activities in an abandoned quarry.
