University of Maryland suspended its club tennis team indefinitely on October 12 after racist imagery targeting Black individuals was distributed to other university tennis clubs ahead of a regional tournament. The offensive material included a graphic featuring Ku Klux Klan imagery and was circulated via a Google document sent to participating schools before last weekend’s event. Toni Rachal, president of the Howard University club tennis team, discovered the image in a shared document and reported it to UMD. The university’s Recreation and Wellness department suspended the entire Maryland Club Tennis organization pending an investigation by the office of student conduct. Bryant Reed, president of the Black Student Union at UMD, expressed that Black students are "extremely disturbed" by this incident, which he believes is part of a larger pattern of racism faced by Black students on campus.
