Rajwinder Singh, a former nurse from Innisfail, had his appeal against the conviction for the brutal murder of Toyah Cordingley heard in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday. Cordingley, 24, was found dead on Wangetti Beach north of Cairns on October 21, 2018, after being stabbed and having her throat cut during a walk with her dog.
Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 25 years following his conviction in December 2025. His legal team argued that the trial judge’s decision to dismiss one jury member midway through the trial should warrant overturning the verdict. The dismissal occurred after accusations of juror bias, and a replacement was brought in from a reserve pool who had heard the same evidence.
During the appeal hearing, Cordingley's mother Vanessa Gardiner broke down as details of her daughter’s death were rehashed. Saul Holt KC, representing Singh, contended that the murder did not warrant more than 20 years due to a lack of additional criminal history. However, Justice David Boddice challenged this, stating that such an act by a stranger on a public beach should merit a harsher sentence. The court is expected to take several weeks before issuing its verdict.
