On October 12, 2026, a passenger train heading from Karachi to Peshawar derailed near Sher Shah Railway Station in Multan district, Punjab province, resulting in at least five deaths and over 40 injuries. The Rehman Baba Express had been traveling at approximately 100 kilometers per hour when it suddenly veered off the tracks around 5:15 AM local time. Rescuers evacuated all passengers from the train’s 14 carriages, with some trapped inside the overturned coaches. Injured passengers were transported to hospitals for treatment.
Railway officials and emergency responders worked quickly at the scene, deploying cranes to remove damaged coaches while ensuring medical care was promptly provided. Pakistan Railways CEO Muhammad Hafeezullah confirmed that a fault in one of the passenger coaches likely caused the derailment. The federal government inspector of railways (FGIR) has been assigned as the inquiry officer to investigate the incident.
Leaders such as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi expressed condolences, urging authorities to provide optimal medical care for the injured and compensation according to Pakistan Railways’ insurance policy.
