On October 13, 2026, an arson attack claimed the lives of four members of a family—Philip and Kim English and their sons Callum (12) and Jayden (9)—in their home in the Birchwood estate in Waterford City. Two other children, aged six and 14, remain hospitalized with critical injuries following the incident. The victims' bodies arrived at Sacred Heart Church on October 18 for a joint funeral, where players from Callum's football club formed a guard of honor. On October 19, a funeral mass was held for the family members who were laid to rest in Kilbarry Cemetery. Two individuals, Cian Stacey (21) and Jessica Dalton (31), have been charged with criminal damage and assault causing serious harm and are awaiting trial. The community mourns deeply as businesses closed in Waterford as a mark of respect for the victims.
