TBG International Limited, a defence contractor, has submitted proposals to convert the former Mossmorran chemical plant in Fife into an "energetics manufacturing facility" for producing weapons components. The company plans to construct process buildings and storage magazines at the site while reusing existing offices and warehouses. According to a letter from Fife Council, this proposal requires an environmental impact assessment due to it falling under Schedule 1 development, which includes industrial-scale chemical installations intended for explosives production.
The closure of Mossmorran affected more than 400 staff members, and the site’s original energy giant anticipates that full decommissioning and dismantling will not be completed until 2028. The proposed conversion would involve significant changes to the landscape, including access infrastructure and landscaping adjustments. This development highlights the potential reuse of large industrial sites for defence purposes despite ongoing environmental concerns and previous employment impacts.
