In England’s second-tier Championship game between Millwall and Swansea, played on October 10th at Millwall’s home stadium, The Den, the match was temporarily halted due to allegations of racist abuse directed at South Korea winger Ji-sung Eom. Eom was warming up as a substitute for Swansea when the incident occurred during the second half. The referee paused the game for about seven minutes while he discussed the matter with both teams’ coaches and then made an announcement over the loudspeakers regarding the alleged racist chanting.
Swansea, who won the match 1-0, condemned the abuse and thanked Millwall Football Club and the police for their swift response. Millwall issued a statement confirming they were aware of “an individual incident of discriminatory abuse” and reiterated their zero-tolerance policy on such behavior. However, Alex Neil, Millwall’s manager, faced criticism from the anti-racism campaign group Kick It Out for his comments suggesting that stopping the game does not address the issue effectively. Kick It Out emphasized the importance of player welfare over maintaining the momentum of a match and urged managers to lead by example in combating discrimination.
