On October 13, 2026, drones hit two ships in Bulgaria's Black Sea economic zone, sinking one and prompting rescue operations. Prime Minister Rumen Radev called these attacks "absolutely unacceptable" and summoned the Russian ambassador, Eleonora Mitrofanova. The Ukrainian-owned ship Chelsea-3, sailing under a Maltese flag, was struck by three drones near Byala, with all 15 crew members rescued; five received minor injuries. One of the ships sank near Krapets, with one crew member rescued.
These attacks follow similar incidents on October 6 when two commercial vessels were hit and one sank, presuming nine Syrian crew members dead. Rescuers continue searching for 11 missing crew members from more recent strikes. Radev requested NATO and EU assistance in investigating these attacks, noting that while direct evidence is lacking, the outcome benefits Russia, suggesting Russian culpability despite a lack of conclusive proof. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia's disregard for civilian lives and maritime security. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was informed about the situation as Bulgaria seeks international support to address these escalating incidents in the Black Sea region.
