Story summary

"A Fine Balance," a stage adaptation of Rohinton Mistry's novel, broke box office records at Crow's Theatre in Toronto starting August 25, becoming the most successful show in the company’s history in terms of ticket sales. Following its success, the play will transfer to Soulpepper for a second run beginning January 14 and running until February 7, featuring the same cast and creative team led by director Chris Abraham. Soulpepper's artistic director Paolo Santalucia expressed excitement about showcasing this Canadian work at their Baillie Theatre. The play’s transfer is made possible due to a postponement of Soulpepper's winter production "The Rez Sisters" until later, caused by an unavoidable personal conflict affecting a key team member. This move highlights the growing audience appreciation for original Canadian theatre works.

Narrative

But the upcoming run of “A Fine Balance” at Soulpepper was made possible because of an opening in the theatre’s schedule; the company had announced earlier this month that it was postponing its winter production of “The Rez Sisters” until a later date due to “an unavoidable personal conflict” affecting a key member of the creative team. “I’m thrilled that even though we’re losing a major Canadian revival of a canonical work, we get to celebrate a work of the future canon of theatre,” said Soulpepper artistic director Paolo Santalucia.
