On October 15, 2026, an active shooter report led to a lockdown at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. The Bend Police Department responded with a significant presence, directing families to Journey Church at 61303 S. Highway 97 as a reunification site. The Associated Press reported that the incident resulted in the deaths of four people, including three children and one teacher. The shooter, Griffin John II, age 16, is also among those killed; he was shot by Kaylub Giamanco, a father who happened to be nearby when the shooting began. Saylor Graham-Poarch, a seven-year-old girl with disabilities who was shot in the face during the attack but survived, has since been moved out of intensive care and faces a long recovery process.
