A 16-month-old toddler was attacked by a coyote on October 16 in Atwater Village, Los Angeles. The child was bitten while the animal entered their backyard and followed them into their home before being treated at a local hospital and later released. In response, California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers euthanized a coyote found near the scene and collected DNA samples from both the child and the animal to confirm if it was responsible for the attack.
Residents had reported concerns about an aggressive coyote nicknamed "Wiley" since January, alleging that one neighbor was feeding the animal, which led to increased sightings of the coyote in daylight hours. Despite previous complaints to authorities, including a formal complaint filed by wildlife expert Rebecca Dmytryk in late July, no immediate action was taken. DNA tests confirmed on October 20 that the euthanized coyote was indeed responsible for the attack.
The incident has raised significant public concern over local officials’ handling of resident complaints about wildlife safety and highlights potential risks when wild animals become accustomed to human interaction due to feeding.
