Story summary

On October 18, 2026, Maryland fired its defensive coordinator, Ted Monachino, a day after the team lost to Rutgers in their fifth consecutive defeat. The firing came amid mounting pressure on head coach Michael Locksley, whose job security is now uncertain following his eighth season. With Maryland's record dropping to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten, the move suggests Locksley will remain at least temporarily secure. Aazaar Abdul-Rahim, who previously coached cornerbacks for Maryland, was appointed as the new defensive coordinator along with inside linebackers coach Zac Spavital taking on a co-defensive coordinator role. The team’s latest losing streak includes 12 straight Big Ten losses, during which they have allowed an average of 43.8 points per game.
