Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu began a three-day state visit to Pakistan on October 20, 2026, marking the first such trip from the Maldives in over a decade. The visit was at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who welcomed Muizzu with a guard of honour at Prime Minister House in Islamabad. During his stay, Muizzu and Shehbaz signed 20 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) covering various areas including defence cooperation, maritime security, health, education, tourism, trade, fisheries, environment, and arts and culture. The agreements aim to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations as they celebrate the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties established in 1966.
