Flair Airlines secured $76 million in emergency aid from the federal government as soaring jet fuel costs threaten the airline industry's profitability. The financial lifeline was approved by The Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corp., which provides loans to offset rising fuel expenses and help keep airfares affordable. Flair CEO Len Corrado noted that the loan demonstrates government recognition of the severity of the issue, aiming to maintain competitiveness in the sector.
In addition to Flair's aid, parent company of Air Transat, Transat A.T. Inc., has already received $430 million since February due to increased fuel prices resulting from the Iran war, which pushed jet fuel costs to double compared to a year earlier. The government also recently provided Porter Airlines with a $125 million bailout loan.
The Crown corporation stipulates that Flair's loan must be repaid within four years, with interest rates below market levels.
